By Kenny Longdon

Many people aspire to have luxuries in their life, and this of course can be traced to the type of car they drive. If you like the finer things in life, then a luxury car goes hand-in-hand, and there are plenty on the market to choose from, either new, or used.

New cars will always be great for things like 'new car smell', the latest technology, state-of-the-art features and having the latest model, luxury cars of course take it up a notch, but there is also great satisfaction getting a used car for a fraction of its new price, especially if it is in great condition or is becoming somewhat of a classic, and again, if the luxury factor is there, it makes for quite the attractive purchase.

Below is our top picks for the best new and used luxury cars available.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class

Mercedes-Benz S-Class Driving Front Angle

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class has been a benchmark for luxury and technology for decades. Whether you are looking at a brand-new version, with all the latest technology, or even a previous generation when buying used, the sheer amount of technology and comfort on offer will not leave you feeling disappointed.

The S-Class is a bona fide limousine-like car, that sees it being a favourite for chauffeuring VIPs, as it is one of a few cars in this list that you will want to spend most of your time being driven in, rather than driving, although it is a fine car to drive, too.

Augmented reality head-up display, ambient interior lighting and a crisp 12.8 OLED infotainment display are just some of the new car highlights, whilst older used examples are not short of toys either, with things like radar-guided cruise control. Clever suspension and damping also means that in any S-Class you merely waft along in supreme comfort, surrounded by luxurious materials presented in the upmost refinement. The Mercedes-Benz S-Class is quite simply the textbook luxury car.

Range Rover

Range Rover in gold side view lifestyle

In the UK, the SUV is extremely popular, but many are two-wheel drive and perhaps a little gimmicky, and therefore fall short of the mark. The Land Rover Range Rover is not one of them. This is a proper all-wheel drive, luxury vault on wheels, which can waft along on city streets or motorways, whilst also being able to conquer any off-road terrain with ease.

Of course, the Range Rover is also a fine status symbol, and you will see lots roaming the streets of major cities, like London, but there is a reason for it, and that reason is pure luxury. They make for a great chauffeur car, too.

Inside you will find superb refinement, with new models featuring a slick digital vibe. Used versions can be found with some nice specifications too like massage seats. Those who like performance will pick out the sought-after V8 engine, or the Sport version, which may not be as luxurious but offers a more dynamic feel.

BMW 7 Series

BMW 7 Series in two tone finish

The 7 Series is BMW's answer to the Mercedes-Benz S-Class mentioned previously. The BMW offers similar luxury, offering a little more dynamic flair, as is the case with many BMW models.

Pictured here in M760e xDrive spec, the 7 Series looks almost sinister, especially in this black and silver finish. And with 571bhp, and a typical 6-cylinder BMW TwinPower Turbo engine, mated with electric plug-in hybrid power, this large saloon can still go from 0 to 62mph in 4.3 seconds.

And with xDrive, the 7 Series will have no problem in the changing British weather. There is also a fully-electric i7 version of the 7 Series too, which arguably feels even more luxurious due to the near silent operation of the electric powertrain. You can even get a 31-inch theatre screen for rear passengers, again, being a car ideal for being driven in rather than driving. But, being a BMW, and despite its size, the 7 Series is still a fine car to drive, too.

Mercedes-Maybach GLS

Mercedes-Benz makes some of the best luxury cars, but if you want even more, then Mercedes-Maybach models take it to another level all together.

The Mercedes-Maybach GLS is the flagship SUV for Mercedes. It showcases an epic blend of radiating power and presence with its exterior design, whilst the interior is all about cutting-edge technology, perfectly complemented with the finest first-class levels of splendour and comfort.

It has special suspension which can make the car bounce up and down, ideal if you get stuck off-road, so like the Range Rover this is a proper piece of kit that can get dirty when needed, despite being a limousine-like SUV on the road. And, despite its size, there is a 4.0-litre V8 engine sat under the bonnet, which produced 549bhp, and is enough to propel this ultra-luxurious flagship SUV from 0 to 62mph in just 4.9 seconds.

Audi S8

Audi S8 Dark Grey Driving Dynamic

Another large, luxurious German saloon, but this time it is from Audi. Sure, you could opt for the Audi A8, but the S8 is just cooler. Partly due to Jason Statham using one as his chariot of choice in The Transporter films, giving the S8 cult hero status.

It is not as grand as an S-Class or 7 Series, almost looking normal in comparison, but clock the quad pipes, dark details including the belt line of the car, and its S8 badge, and you know this is about luxury, with added performance.

Of course, if you wanted a limo-like car, that can also give a supercar something to think about, then the S8 is it. 0 to 62mph takes 3.8 seconds, so you will be clear of the S-Class and 7 Series in terms of pace, ideal if you fancy yourself as the next Mr Statham.

Porsche Panamera

The Panamera is a luxury car for those who like to be able to switch things to a more dynamic feeling when the mood suits, it is a Porsche after all, so it was always going to offer unreal pace when needed.

Think of it then as a more refined sports car, with the ability to munch miles with ease, but then get a move on down a twisty b road if the mood suits.

Opt for the range-topping Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid and you will experience 0 to 62mph in just 2.9 seconds, making it the fastest car in this list. Of course, there are multiple models, so you can tailor your Panamera to be as luxurious or as dynamic as you want, but you will always get a nice mix of the two.

Aston Martin DB12

Aston Martin DB12 in Silver

Many cars in this list are large saloon or SUVs, so it is always nice to see a grand tourer that can offer incredible dynamics but can do so whilst offering ultimate luxury, too.

The Aston Martin DB12 is arguably the prettiest car in the list too, and if you opt for the Volante, then things get prettier still.

Being an Aston Martin, luxury comes as standard, but unlike most cars in this list, the Aston feels that bit more special. It will turn heads, whilst the others are pretty understated, and can go unnoticed, ideal if you want to stay under the radar. The DB12 is a car that is going to turn heads, not ideal if you want to get around subtly. The DB12 is quite simply a luxury grand tourer that can also impress on the racetrack too, but then waft home in supreme comfort on the motorway after.

BMW X7

BMW X7 in Blue Driving front angle

The X7 is like the BMW 7 Series, offering luxury and typical BMW dynamics, but instead of being housed in a saloon, it is in a popular SUV body.

Despite being a large SUV, it is a BMW after all, and although it is not an M car, it can still get a move on in serious style and composure when it needs to.

Inside, the widescreen instrument cluster and infotainment screens house all the car's settings, of which there are many, which when combined with the luxury material of the seats and cabin, ensure the X7 is a fine place to spend time.

Genesis GV80

Genesis GV80 Parked in Green

In a list full of mainly German cars, it is always nice to see a bit of an outside the box choice. With Aston Martin and Land Rover flying the British flag for luxury, Genesis fly the luxury flag for the Koreans, and do so in impressive fashion.

Interior presentation is first class, cocooning driver and passengers with fine leather, refinement and class, with the added digital infotainment and instrument cluster for an ultra-modern showcase.

There is 300bhp on tap, meaning it is not the fastest luxury car in this list, with 0 to 62mph coming up in 6.7 seconds, but then luxury is more about wafting along, rather than hurrying, and the Genesis GV80 leaves that to other super SUVs, as not everyone will want a ballistic luxury car. The GV80 lets its class do the talking, rather than its performance.

Mercedes-Benz V-Class

Mercedes-Benz V-Class Driving Front Angle

Need luxury for up to eight people, the V-Class is a textbook choice, especially commercially as these cars are a real favourite for premium chauffeur companies, often used to transport football players, celebrities and the like, with games consoles and TVs in the back.

They tend to always be black or silver, with blacked out windows for privacy, whilst the interior leather is high quality and there is lots of space to get comfortable. There are even versions with captains chairs and different layouts to tailor to your business. Of course, you could also use them for family life, too.

Being a Mercedes-Benz, refinement is excellent, and the driver gets the now familiar throughout the range digital screens for infotainment and instrument cluster, which still look great despite being some of the first on the market.
